Hey, with the end of the year approaching, I decided to create a piece about how New Year's Day was celebrated in the USSR. This has changed throughout history. For six years from 1929, New Year's Day, like Christmas, was a normal working day. Celebrations were forbidden, and having a Christmas tree in the home could land you in jail. Stalin believed this would eradicate religion from the consciousness of the citizens of the Soviet empire. He changed his mind about New Year's Eve celebrations in 1935, when his friend Pavel Postyshev visited him in his office. He convinced him that the tradition of the Christmas tree was worth reviving. Over the following years, New Year's Eve celebrations returned to favor with the Soviet authorities. New Year's Eve was also celebrated during the war. In the latest episode, I talk about a New Year's Eve party at Stalin's dacha in 1945. His closest associates joined him in the celebration. After the war, New Year's celebrations in the USSR experienced a veritable boom. Massive structures and illuminations appeared on the streets of Moscow and other cities.
