In this video, I explain how patients undergoing treatment for the foot, ankle, and calf can use crutches or knee walkers (knee bikes, knee kickboards) to support non-weight-bearing or partial weight-bearing. I explain the pros and cons of axillary crutches, wrist crutches, and knee walkers, and whether bilateral crutch walking is necessary or advantageous depending on weight-bearing status. I also explain which side to use the crutches on when partial weight-bearing is permitted, a common misconception and error among patients. I hope that by learning about the types and methods of crutch walking and how to use a knee walker, you will find some help in walking, even with some discomfort.
