History of this piece: This overture is a masterful, two-part symphony-like introduction that perfectly captures the opera’s duality of dark, supernatural tragedy and energetic comedy. Famously written on the night before the opera's 1787 premiere in Prague, it is essentially a dramatic prologue to the entire story. Unlike most traditional overtures that conclude with a definitive finish, the Molto Allegro ends quietly and transitions directly without a break into the opera’s very first scene Because the original operatic version of the overture fades out and modulates to transition directly into Leporello's opening aria, a standalone concert version requires a modified, definitive final cadence.
