⚓️ Racing to a Beat Up Monster Ship Heading for Duluth

Racing out onto Lake Superior to get a close look at the rugged ocean going ship Lake St. Clair before it started moving toward the Duluth ship canal immediately felt like an adventure. Anchored just off the piers in Duluth, Minnesota, this hard working monster ship stood out with its rough weathered appearance, heavy scrapes, worn exterior, and enormous presence on the water that made it look even more intimidating up close. As we approached the ship, the captain radioed the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge to let them know the vessel would be getting underway momentarily, giving us the rare opportunity to see the ship while the anchor was still down before it began moving. We circled the vessel in my boat to capture incredible views of the massive hull, cranes, anchor chain, and rugged details before racing back to shore to make it to the south pier in time for the arrival. The Lake St. Clair then made its way through the Duluth ship canal with tug Missouri assisting nearby as a powerful horn salute echoed between the ship and the bridge. The lighting conditions were perfect to capture every scrape, rust streak, and mark along the side of the vessel as it squeezed beneath the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge, creating one of those moments where a ship looks far too massive to possibly fit through the canal even though it does.
