This Part of Laos Surprised Us… But Not in the Way You'd Expect

We were warned about this place, but this part of Laos surprised us... and not in the way you'd expect. Huay Xai is a small remote town in Bokeo, only known for the famous slow boat journey from Thailand to Luang Prabang, as well as the elusive Gibbons, but not much else. But we unexpectedly arrived in the middle of one of the biggest Buddhist celebrations in Laos, the end of Buddhist lent (Boun Ok Phansa), when all Lao people compete in Dragon boat races, give offerings (alms giving) to the monks and celebrate the festival of light (Boun Lai Heua Fai).
