We Found an Ancient Roman Road Hidden in Snowdonia | Llyn Elsi Walk from Betws-y-Coed

We found an ancient Roman road hidden in the forests above Betws-y-Coed while exploring one of Snowdonia's most underrated walks. What started as a rainy walk from Betws-y-Coed turned into a journey through over 2,000 years of history. In this adventure, we leave the bustling streets of Betws-y-Coed behind and climb through the forest towards the beautiful waters of Llyn Elsi. Despite the wet weather, the views across Eryri (Snowdonia National Park) make every step worthwhile. Following the shoreline of the reservoir, we discover the memorial marking its opening before heading off the main trail in search of something far older – the ancient Roman road known as Sarn Helen. Hidden amongst the trees, this remarkable route once formed part of the Roman road network that crossed Wales. Walking along the same path that travellers used centuries ago is a truly special experience and easily becomes the highlight of the day. From there, we descend towards Miners Bridge, cross the river, and enjoy a peaceful riverside and boardwalk walk back to Betws-y-Coed, where a well-earned coffee awaits at the finish.
