I Took Oklahoma’s Backroads… and Found All This
What happens when you leave the interstate behind and ignore the famous roads everyone else takes? This Randomland Adventure heads deep into Oklahoma’s forgotten highways in search of the places most travelers never see. We begin in Cushing, the Pipeline Capital of the World, exploring a fascinating downtown where beautiful old buildings, abandoned storefronts, vintage gas stations, and signs of new life all exist side by side. Along the way we uncover incredible antiques and the surprising history that made this small city one of the most important oil towns in America. From there we stumble into an unexpected piece of comic book history at the hometown of Dick Tracy creator Chester Gould before exploring the legendary Pawnee Bill Ranch and Museum. Following the historic Pawnee Bill Highway, we continue through quiet Oklahoma communities where every stop seems to reveal another forgotten story. In Perry we visit Oklahoma’s oldest continuously operating gas station, wander a classic downtown, enjoy a century-old café, explore one of the strangest abandoned triangular Conoco stations we’ve ever seen, and meet the wonderful Craig Kemnitz, whose family has preserved an incredible piece of Oklahoma history. Then things take a strange turn. One tiny town feels almost completely frozen in time, with an unbelievably wide Main Street, abandoned buildings, eerie silence, and an atmosphere that honestly gave me Silent Hill and Children of the Corn vibes. We can’t resist exploring to see what secrets are still hiding there. Finally we investigate the bizarre legend that John Wilkes Booth escaped capture and spent the rest of his life in Oklahoma before ending the day with one last gigantic roadside surprise that perfectly caps off one of the most unexpected days of the entire road trip. If you love forgotten highways, vintage Americana, abandoned places, museums, roadside attractions, hidden history, and discovering the stories tucked away in small-town America, you’re in the right place.
