ALL of Route 66 in Kansas! Lead Mines, Tow Tater & Hidden History
We drove the ENTIRE Kansas stretch of Historic Route 66 - and discovered far more than we expected along America's most famous highway. Dodging rain clouds across all 13.2 miles of Route 66 in Kansas, we begin in Baxter Springs, one of the oldest and most historic towns on the Mother Road. We explore the haunting downtown streets, visit the beautifully restored Phillips 66 Visitor Center, and descend into a real lead and zinc mining exhibit beneath the Baxter Springs Heritage Center, uncovering the mining history that built this corner of the state. From there we follow the original Route 66 alignment across southeast Kansas, crossing the historic Rainbow Bridge, passing through Riverton, and continuing into Galena - one of the most famous Route 66 towns anywhere thanks to its connection to Pixar's Cars. Along the way we check out new Route 66 Centennial additions, photo opportunities, historic buildings, roadside landmarks, Gearhead Curios, a revamped vintage store, classic downtown architecture, Cars on the Route, Tow Tater, and even one of the town's former brothels. We also visit the brand new Kansas-Missouri Route 66 gateway installation before continuing east into Spencer, Missouri, where we sit down with Ed Klein for an update on one of the most ambitious preservation projects anywhere on Route 66. From restored cabins and vintage structures to future plans for the property, Spencer remains one of the most fascinating hidden gems on the Mother Road. Join us as we travel every mile of Route 66 in Kansas, exploring forgotten history, roadside attractions, restored landmarks, classic Americana, mining heritage, vintage architecture, and the people working to preserve Route 66 for its 100th anniversary.
