Carving A Thin Seam of Boulder Opal
This video shows the process of how i carved a piece of boulder opal with a thin seam of colour in to a beautiful gem. This piece was particularly tricky as it was a thin colour bar and in the splitting process before, it didn't actually split how i wanted it to, hence this video. I did go back between the grits a few times as i noticed scratched i needed to get out. A good way of ensuring you get all the scratches out is to colour in the top of the opal with a sharpie black permanent marker. This helps highlight and deep scratches and you will easily be able to tell when it has come out, something not also apparent when the stone is wet. ALWAYS WERE AT MINIMUM A RESPIRATOR WHEN CUTTING ANY STONES and water is a must, not only for minimising dust, but it also helps in reducing heat in a stone to avoid damage. The grit of what i used were as followed 180 Diamond rotary bit 280 Nova Point 600 Nova Point 1,200 Nova Point 8,000 Nova Point Cerium Oxide on a felp point. Dremel 3000 with attachment handpiece. Then just a standard dremel chuck in the end for easy of adjustability.
