Like every Friday, today at Masiosare we have the History and Humanism Analysis Panel. We're joined in the studio by Karla Motte, Cristina Gómez, Sara Hidalgo, and Lorenzo Meyer. Tonight's topic: "The Founding of the PAN." The National Action Party was founded between September 14 and 17, 1939, during a Constituent Assembly, by one of its main founders, Manuel Gómez Morín. It emerged as a response to the leftist policies of President Lázaro Cárdenas, who had clashed with businessmen and church groups. Its members included former Maderistas, as well as sectors linked to business and banking, among other right-wing conservative groups. In 1989, it became the first party other than the PRI to govern a state in the Republic, following Ernesto Ruffo's victory in the Baja California elections. In 2000, Vicente Fox, a member of the National Action Party (PAN), became the first president of the Republic to belong to the PAN, thus ending the PRI's hegemonic regime. His government presented itself as a "government of change," but maintained alliances with the PRI in Congress and continued the neoliberal economic model. Felipe Calderón assumed office as the federal executive branch amid accusations of electoral fraud in the 2006 election. His administration was marked by the so-called "war on drug trafficking." After two consecutive six-year terms, Josefina Vázquez Mota lost the presidential election to PRI member Enrique Peña Nieto. The PAN entered the federal opposition, although it maintains state governments and a significant presence in the Congress.
