One example of this is graduation. When our Navajo students achieve there is an overwhelming support in the community as these young people accomplish what they set out to do. There is a teaching that goes back to the traditional days. The sum of that teaching is… Never do less than your best, and when you can do better than your best. This teaching is what is told to the young people when they are encouraged by their elders and loved ones. Navajo Historian Wally Brown shares about this teaching and discusses recently seeing graduation celebrations where families rally around the family members who are accomplishing what they set out to do.
