Excited, motivated! This week we're dealing with an unusual fault. In our first contact with the client, he tells us that his 16 A circuit breaker tripped unexpectedly. He also feels a current inside his house when touching certain metal objects. What could be causing this fault? In this DomoAdventure, we're once again detectives for a day. WILL YOU JOIN ME? After this initial assessment, everything points to an equipotential grounding problem or improper grounding installation. The variables are many and diverse, so it's best to identify the possible problem. We found the 16 A circuit breaker down, and when we raised it, the RCD tripped, which suggests a possible ground fault. The next step is to examine the output wires of said mechanism to see where they flow. Curiously, when leaving only the 16 A circuit breaker and the RCD connected, the latter doesn't trip. Logically, we tested all the connected circuit breaker swaps to see when the circuit breaker trips or not. We concluded that the 10 A lighting circuit breaker is also influenced by the fault (remember the light bulb that was supplying power?). We disconnected the light bulb and reset the 10 A circuit breaker, but the RCD continues to trip. Given the circumstances, we also noticed that the connection cables had reversed their polarity, so we reversed their connection order (neutral on the right, neutral on the left), but the same problem described so far persists. The next step is to measure the grounds with our clamp meter. After all the checks, when measuring phase and ground, it gives us 390.5 V instead of 230 V. And when measuring neutral to ground, it's approximately 200 V, when it should be 0 V. This suggests that the problem is coming from outside the house, not inside. So, we continue investigating. When we located the ground wire outside the home, it was bare, rusty, and moldy. We disconnected it and rechecked the electrical panel, giving us the same results. What does this mean? No ground wire is installed. Since prevention is better than insurance, we ultimately used a multifunction meter that confirms the initial measurements. We performed a differential trip test, and curiously, since it's over 280 V, it chooses not to act for safety reasons. From what we've seen, it's all clear.
