The Chinese auto industry, with its technological maturity and massive overcapacity, is now pushing into the European market. Over 140 brands could produce 55 million vehicles annually – more than twice the number sold in China each year. That doesn't sound like a model to follow. But our guest is certain that orienting ourselves toward the world's largest automotive market is essential. Technological trends are set there through short innovation cycles and customer proximity. Consequently, there's much to be learned from China to solve domestic problems. For example, the shift to electric vehicles, even though the share of electric cars in new registrations isn't as high as often reported – this is also discussed, as are the superiority of Chinese battery cell manufacturers and their lead in software-defined vehicles. Given the immense pressure on the once-leading European automotive industry, Timmer is certain: "We need to think about new forms of cooperation, perhaps even a new brand in Europe in partnership with technology players."
