[4K] Humboldt Forum Berlin - Ethnologisches Museum - erste Eindrücke

Since September 23, 2021 the Ethnological Museum in the Humboldt Forum Berlin is open and accessible. Although only the west wing is open and thus only about two fifths of the area on the second floor, you can spend hours there. This video gives first impressions of the newly curated exhibition and may inspire you to visit. The last few years have been marked by intense discussions about the origin of the collections, provenance research, the return of objects, what may be exhibited and how, and whether the Humboldt Forum is the right place for these museums at all. And the collections are huge. To this day, no one knows exactly how many masks and combs, how many bracelets, arrowheads, coins, vases, bowls, drums and wall paintings, how many royal thrones, animal sculptures, Buddha heads there actually are that came to Berlin from Africa, Asia, America, Australia and Oceania. The estimate says: half a million. The 140,000 audio documents, the 285,000 photos, the 20,000 films, the 200,000 documents are not counted. Only a small single-digit percentage of these are on display, and even that is an overwhelming amount. The discussions will shape the Humboldt Forum in the following years. In the video, you can also hear the constant shrill of the alarm system when someone gets too close to the free-standing objects. Unfortunately, this happens all the time, because the information signs with their small font are hard to read without leaning forward. This especially affects the many older visitors. I assume that a better solution will be found in the near future.
