Unfortunately for it, while it was praised by critics, it was poorly received by the general gaming community due to translation issues, controls, and various other bugs. This remake is quite faithful, for better or worse. So while mechanically, perhaps in tactical terms—that is, what you do in combat—it may have been improved, and there have certainly been changes... well, the rest has remained more or less the same as it was when the series' forefather was released 25 years ago. This makes it a difficult product to evaluate. Because while it will realistically appeal to longtime fans, it's also possible that the various changes it has undergone will be annoying or even displeasing. The graphics have certainly improved, but it must also be said that the game is far too demanding for its appearance, which is fine, but certainly not cutting edge. For those who weren't already fans, though, well, Gothic 1 Remake is frankly a difficult product to recommend. Do you like games that aim to be so "realistic" that they force you to use slow, unresponsive animations when your character is incapacitated? That throws you unarmed into a hostile world and tells you "learn to swim or die"? That expects you to kill stuff and level up to learn new skills, including combat ones? Then perhaps this remake is for you. But if you don't share these tastes, what the game offers is very uninteresting. And it tends to be better done by other competitors—be it the recent Kingdom Come 2: Deliverance, which is first-person while Gothic is third-person; Or rather, Dragon's Dogma 2 on the one hand, or the delightful Kenshi on the other. As cutting-edge as Gothic was at the time, this remake is so faithful that it feels outdated in today's world. That doesn't make it a bad game. It does, however, mean that perhaps it's worth looking elsewhere before considering it. ---------------------- This video is a snippet from the 144th stream of the Lamentations in Company, "Discovering Gothic 1 Remake," dedicated entirely to this title.
