FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA Ep. 12 – Sauris, l’isola tedesca di Zahre

The valley of #Sauris, in #Friuli, is a Germanic linguistic island where old inhabitants still speak a German dialect that dates back to the mid-1200s. Over the centuries, this language has preserved its archaic form due to typical isolation of mountain communities, as we saw on the episode about Val Resia. However, this isolation pushed locals towards a self-sufficiency production and built a community spirit, like people told me, such as Mr. Costante, the dean of the valley. Everything has to deal with nature here: from the ham which breaths the high altitude air, to weaving, whose art is connected to agriculture. In this new story about local tourism and Italian ‘borghi’ (villages), we are once again confronted with ancient practices that have a symbiotic relation with nature. And we can get inspired by it even today.
