Lo abbiamo trovato! E' il marmo di Bologna che un tempo si estraeva in Appennino

Who would have thought that marble was once quarried in Bologna?! This time, our little exploratory expedition led us on the trail of an unknown past. The texts published by the University of Bologna in the 19th century, in which Domenico Santagata wrote of Bolognese marble as "similar to that of Carrara," were helpful. We found the calcium carbonate outcrop, the old quarry, and the cut boulders ready to be removed, but abandoned in the woods when the quarrying fell into disuse. Our exploration was also fortunate because downstream from the quarry, near the river, we found an ancient lime kiln, partially buried by vegetation, where two centuries ago lime was baked for use in construction. The video continues with a visit to one of the few surviving mills that still stone-grind the ancient grains grown in their fields! Filming and editing by Martina Mari Fabio Righi of ARCA Appennino Bolognese was on the expedition with her; Dario Mingarelli, historian; Salvatore Di Stefano, GAE.
