"Bela Lugosi's Dead" is a song by Bauhaus. It was the first tune they recorded at their very first studio session as a band in January 1979. In August, it was released as their first single. Later, alternate and live versions were released on some compilations. Finally, in 2018, that whole session was released as "The Bela Session", and that 2018 reissue of the song I use in the video. "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is often considered the first gothic rock record ever. First or not, it's surely a goth rock classic, standard, canon, and harbinger. "Bela Lugosi's Dead" was recorded "live in the studio" in a single take six weeks after the band had formed. All four band members are credited as writers of the song, bassist David J has claimed that he wrote the lyrics. The tune is named after Bela Lugosi, the actor who is best known for playing the title character in the 1931 classic movie "Dracula". He died in 1956, so he was indeed dead when the song was being written and recorded. Lyrics: White on white translucent black capes Back on the rack Bela Lugosi's dead The bats have left the bell tower The victims have been bled Red velvet lines the black box Bela Lugosi's dead Bela Lugosi's dead Undead, undead, undead Undead, undead, undead The virginal brides file past his tomb Strewn with time's dead flowers Bereft in deathly bloom Alone in a darkened room The count Bela Lugosi's dead Bela Lugosi's dead Bela Lugosi's dead Undead, undead, undead Undead, undead, undead Undead Oh Bela Bela's undead Oh Bela Bela's undead Bela's undead Oh Bela Bela's undead Oh Bela Undead
