It has a sense that even in the darkest of times, where our lives pass in front of us, with the chance that we may breathe our final breath, it gives us hope that we may make it through someway, somehow. Having grown up with Sunset Riders, this cover is truly special to me. I still remember playing this with my brothers. Going through those dangerous towns and pushing forward while the outlaws tried their best to stop us. I always imagined myself being one of those outlaws because I thought that the bandanas they used as masks were so cool. This is probably my favorite shoot ‘em up game ever. Ironically, even though most people played the arcade and SNES versions, the one I grew up playing was the Genesis version. It was different and only had Billy and Cormano, but that’s all we knew and I do hold that game dear to my heart. Years later, I discovered the Snes version and loved how different it was, as well as having more heroes to choose from. In order to honor both, I showcased some gameplay from both games, with Cormano representing that Genesis version I grew up with, and Steve the SNES/arcade versions. For this cover, I brought this theme to life with an 80s melodic rock/metal twist: soaring guitars, cinematic acoustics, powerful orchestra hits, machine gun drums and a lone gunslinger lead tone riding above the desert wind. In the beginning, I kept it true to the original but then expanded the intensity with a more metal feel, which fit perfectly. I tried my best to dress up like the four gunslingers, In the lead guitar, with my Ecuadorian poncho taking the spotlight to represent the legendary Cormano, my rhythm guitar attire for Bob, acoustic Steve, and Billy for the solos (because he’s the cool one). I was overdue for a Sunset Riders cover, and I’m glad I could bring this theme to life finally.
