Top Wairoa Hut to Waiau Hut - Te Araroa (Part 14)

My 3000km walk along the length of New Zealand continues. This five day section takes me from Top Wairoa Hut in Mt Richmond Forest Park, out to the village of St Arnaud and then into the Nelson Lakes National Park. From Top Wairoa Hut, I climb up to Mt Ellis and then drop down to Hunters Hut, before walking through the Red Hills to Porters Creek Hut. For my final day in Mt Richmond Forest Park, I walk out to St Arnaud, where I take 2 days off. After resting from the Richmond's, I start the Waiau Pass section (also referred to as one of the hardest sections of the trail) through Nelson Lakes National Park. The first day takes me around Lake Rotoiti to Lakehead Hut and then up the Travers Valley, passing John Tait Hut on the way to Upper Travers Hut, where I spend the night. The following day, I cross over Travers Saddle and drop down to the Sabine Valley and West Sabine Hut. Three hours further up the Sabine Valley is Blue Lake Hut. Blue Lake is thought to have the clearest freshwater in the world. Bad weather forces me to stay another night at Blue Lake, before crossing Waiau Pass - the second highest point on Te Araroa at 1870m asl. The descent off the pass brings me into the Waiau Valley and down to the recently built Waiau Hut. This channel is dedicated to my walk on the 3000km Te Araroa Trail, sharing my experiences and trying to raise the funds I will need to achieve this.
