What if Jon Snow Was Built Like The Mountain? Catelyn Stark stands in the Courtyard of Winterfell, a baby boy held in her hands. The host of Northmen, her new husband among them, should be returning from war at any moment. Eventually, the gates open as a few hundred Stark men flood into the courtyard. At the front, Ned Stark approaches her, a babe of his own in his arms. They don't say anything; they don't have to, Catelyn understands what this means. Jon Snow plays with his brother Robb in his room, Maester Luwin watching over them as they clash toys with each other. They pretend to be the greatest Warriors from the history of the seven Kingdoms, Robb as Aemon the Dragon Knight, Jon as Ser Duncan the Tall. At age six, Jon already stands a head taller than his half-brother, but despite that, he doesn’t use his physical strength to bully or demean Robb at all. Catelyn enters the room, seeing the two boys playing together. She grabs Robb by the arm and drags him away from Jon, who just sits there and watches. He plays with the toys a bit more before a splitting migraine makes him curl up on the ground. Maester Luwin walks over to Jon, attempting to comfort him. Maester Luwin: Is it happening again? Jon Snow (child): Yeah… the pain just gets worse. Whenever something bad happens to me, it always gets worse. Maester Luwin: For a boy your age, your size might be the reason this keeps happening. That pain may hurt you, but unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done. I'm sorry, Jon, but you just have to keep it inside. Jon Snow (child): I know, it just hurts… a lot. A few years later, Jon and Robb are playing again, this time in the training yard. Ser Rodrick watches them eagerly as they use training Swords for the first time, looking for bad habits he can quickly weed out. Jon gets the upper hand, knocking Robb’s blade to the side, his strength allowing him to easily overpower his brother. His sword accidentally hits Robb across the cheek, however, and Catelyn comes rushing over to Robb, who’s crying on the ground. Jon finds himself standing before his father in the Hall. Maester Luwin and Ser Rodrick attest to the fact that Jon’s attack was an accident, while Catelyn tries to use the opportunity to get Jon sent away. Ned quickly sees through the claims, sending Jon back to his room. That night, he couldn't sleep, only thinking about his place as a bastard. Soon after Jon reaches eleven, Ned Stark observes his sons in the training yard from a balcony above them. Robb Stark and Jon Snow practice with swords in front of over two dozen onlookers, including the Lord of Winterfell. Jon knocks Robb to the ground, his training sword flying to the side. Robb slowly opens his eyes as his vision refocuses, his ears also slowly registering sounds again as the ringing goes away. Robb looks up to see the nearly six-foot-tall boy extending a hand to help him up. Jon Snow (child)(concerned): Robb, are you alright? Robb Stark (child): Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. We’re gonna need Father to tell us who your mother is one day. I need to meet the woman who gave birth to something as big as you. Jon Snow (child): I’d thank her! No disrespect to Lady Catelyn, of course. Robb Stark (child): Ha! Maybe I’ll tell her you said that. She’ll try to get father to banish you again! Jon Snow (child): You wouldn’t… Robb Stark (child): You better start letting me win then! Jon Snow (child): Not a chance! Ned laughs as he hears his sons bicker, eagerly watching as they go a few more rounds with training swords. Jon knocks Robb to the ground over and over again, but doesn’t let his victories go to his head. He always helps Robb up, offering some tips on how to try to combat his size. On the other hand, Robb doesn’t waver in determination, using each failure as an opportunity to get better. Despite how fiercely they fight, it’s obvious that there’s no malice between them, something that Ned looks proud of as they go round after round. The boys continue despite Ser Rodrick’s attempts to separate them, fighting until they’re broken up by a couple of men at arms. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
