Automatic Transmission Removal—FAST & EASY (Step-by-Step!)

Today we’re going to walk through how to remove an automatic transmission and provide some tips along the way. We are using a 1968 Chevy C10 in this case, and we’re replacing a TH350 transmission with a Tremec TKX using a Speedway Motors adapter kit. A good first step here is to drain the fluid out of the transmission so you don’t have to worry about it spilling when you start moving things around. You will also need to detach and set aside some of the surrounding components before removing the transmission. Once all the peripheral parts are disconnected, it’s time to take out the bell housing bolts and make sure the engine has rear support, so it won’t drop when the transmission comes out. Be sure to position the transmission jack so that you can support the transmission and easily take out the crossmember. If you don’t have a lift and are working from the floor, a Floor Jack Trans Adapter can help support the transmission pan and make this process easier in place of a regular pad.
