One such belief is that he died at Penugonda in captivity. Another belief says that he died in the streets of Tirupati as a beggar. Which one of the above beliefs is true? How did Timmarasu spend his last days? Can an enquiry based on epigraphy help us? What if we travel into the world of inscriptions to find answers for a puzzle called "Timmarasu's last days?" This episode of Into the World of Inscriptions, an Anveshi Epigraphy Series, explores the lesser known facts of the last days of Vijayanagara Empire 's celebrated prime minister - Timmarasu. ************ Brief introduction to Primer Minster Timmarasu: Mahamantri Timmarusu is the most prominent historical figure from medieval South India. His close association with the much celebrated emperor of Vijayanagara, Sri Krishnadevaraya, has become a tale of epic proportions for last five centuries. Mahamantri Timmarusu, a Telugu movie released in 1962, seems to be only full length biopic made on this greatest personality of Vijayanagara Empire. But this movie too doesn't reflect the accurate life history of the Mahamantri after the death of young prince Tirumalaraya. Timmarusu was not just a politician but a clever military general and an erudite scholar of Vedanta. After Krishnaraya’s accession to Vijayanagara throne, Timmarusu started playing a key role in shaping up the destiny of the empire. 20th century historian, K. Iswara Dutt said that “Timmarasu’s military prowess, political prescience and uncanny foresight were indissolubly linked to the events of history of which he helped to shape.” Timmarusu’s military genuineness can be well understood from Mangalagiri inscription. He was one of the brightest brains of 16th century South India. Such an influential and highly placed personality in Vijayanagara politics has fallen from his position for no reason of his own. It so happened that the only son of Krishanadeva Raya died due to poisoning in the year 1525. It was undoubtedly a palace intrigue and treason committed by the enemies of emperor. Somehow Timmarasa and his brother’s names were brought into this crime and turned them to be the prime suspects. The grieving Krishnaraya stripped of the prime minister’s post of Timmarasa.
