Reinhard Heydrich, the Executioner of Prague, died on June 4, 1942, from the horsehair of his own car's upholstery. Shrapnel from Operation Anthropoid pierced his chest cavity. The sepsis that doctors were unable to reverse did the rest. He was the only Nazi leader eliminated by an Allied operation during the war. He was 38 years old and had presided over the Wannsee Conference, where he coordinated the extermination of 11 million people five months earlier. The Lidice massacre began at dawn on June 10. 173 men and teenagers were shot against the wall of a barn. 88 children from Lidice were sent to Chelmno and gassed in trucks en route. 184 women were deported to Ravensbrück. The village was burned, blown up with explosives, and erased from official maps of the Protectorate. More than two thousand Czechs were executed in the following weeks during the Heydrichiad. Karel Čurda, the Czech paratrooper who betrayed his comrades to the Gestapo in exchange for one million crowns, lived under a false German identity until 1945. He was executed in Prague in April 1947. The man who presided over Wannsee carried the nickname Moses Handel from childhood due to rumors about his Jewish ancestry. His SS personnel file contained an anomaly in his great-grandmother's surname that no legal process conclusively investigated. His brother, Heinz Siegfried Heydrich, spent decades trying to erase the family name. In the only interview his son, Heider, gave in Prague in 2011, he stated that his father's assassination had been the right decision.
