Hermann Göring, founder of the Gestapo and legal successor to Adolf Hitler, was arrested by the SS themselves in April 1945 at Mauterndorf Castle, awaiting an execution order signed by the man he had served for 22 years. Martin Bormann intercepted the telegram Göring sent to Hitler's bunker and reframed it as a coup attempt. His brother, Albert Göring, used the same surname to save Jews and dissidents. He arrived at the Theresienstadt concentration camp with a truck, claiming he needed workers for the Skoda factory. The SS opened three files on him. Göring was named after his Jewish godfather, Hermann Epenstein, the wealthy man who lent his castles to the family and whose relationship with Göring's mother lasted 15 years. At boarding school, his classmates hung a sign around his neck that read, "My godfather is a Jew." The future founder of the Gestapo walked around the courtyard for hours wearing that sign.
