A fourth baby panda has been born at Everland Panda World in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. Everland announced today (the 10th) that giant panda Aibao (12 years old) gave birth to a female baby panda on the 3rd. The baby panda weighed 171g and was born to father Lebao (13 years old) and mother Aibao. This birth marks the third instance of natural panda breeding in Korea, following Fubao in 2020 and the twins Ruibao and Huibao in 2023. Aibao gave birth to the baby panda at 10:35 a.m. on the 3rd, just over two hours after labor began. Everland stated that both Aibao and the baby panda are currently in good health. An Everland official stated, “Mother Aibao is skillfully and warmly caring for her cub, drawing on her past experience,” adding, “Panda World zookeepers, veterinarians, and professional zookeepers dispatched from the China Panda Protection and Research Center are doing their utmost to assist with Aibao’s postpartum recovery and childcare.” Aibao has been living in an indoor enclosure and receiving intensive care since the 26th of last month, after showing signs of pregnancy such as increased sleep time and reduced food intake. Pandas are known to be animals for whom natural breeding is extremely difficult, as their fertile period occurs only once a year and typically lasts only one to three days in the spring. Furthermore, hormonal changes appear almost identically during actual pregnancy and phantom pregnancy, making it difficult to confirm pregnancy until just before delivery. Previously, Everland scientifically analyzed hormonal data from Aibao and Lebao through blood and urine tests to identify a period with a high probability of breeding success, and successfully achieved natural mating last February. During this process, close cooperation was also maintained with the China Panda Protection and Research Center. Everland plans to review the timing for a public unveiling after the baby panda has learned to walk on its own and has developed immunity. Until then, the baby panda's growth diary and the daily life of the panda family will be shared through official social media channels, such as YouTube. The three cubs born earlier, including Fu Bao, were first unveiled to the general public five to six months after birth. Meanwhile, Fu Bao moved to the Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base in Sichuan Province, China, on April 3, 2024, where she is currently living, while Rui Bao and Hui Bao are also preparing for their return to China this winter.
