Horn Speakers for Newbies: Madisound's Fostex BK-16 6.5" Full Range Driver Folded Horn Kit
In this episode, we talked about one of Tom recent purchases that we thought would be a good horn speaker for newbies. This is the older generation of the FOSTEX BK16 speaker kit sold, or used to be sold by Madisound in Madison, Wisconsin USA. This earlier version of the BK16 used to need a FOSTEX T90 tweeter to extend the highs. Here, we used a SB Audience ROSSO driver with a horn in place of the T90 to get a more substantial presentation. Based on our REW measurements, we can clearly see the benefit of the horn loading and the need for a tweeter operating above 8KHz. The biggest surprise for us was when we swapped a 50W into 8 ohms class D amplifier made by Acoustas with a 45W per channel Conrad Johnson MV55. Not only did this speaker play much louder, but it transformed a 2 dimensional, anemic sounding speaker into a speaker with a 3D soundstage, good dynamics and full range sounding. The need for equalization was drastically reduced. It became a speaker system worthy of our recommendation. This underscoring the importance of component matching and system synergy, and why everyone should own a good tube amplifier. We had a lot of fun making this video and hope you enjoy it as much as we did. The book reference in the video is by F. Alton Everett "Critical Listening Skills for Audio Professionals".
