Gulko: alto riesgo para tumbar a Bronstein, por Leontxo García | El rincón de los inmortales 557
Players who take the ultimate risks with brilliance have always been among the most admired. But even more impressive is when they do so against one of the most creatively talented players in history. This is what happens in the game in this video, played in the 1968 Moscow Championship: Boris Gulko (born in 1947) displays audacity bordering on recklessness against David Bronstein (1924-2006), runner-up in the 1951 World Championship after drawing (12-12) with the great patriarch of Soviet chess, Mikhail Botvinnik. We now know—because Gulko's subsequent career was marked by great success—that such audacity stemmed from immense talent: Gulko is the only chess player in history to have been champion of both the Soviet Union and the United States (where he emigrated in 1986 after becoming a dissident and staging three hunger strikes). and one of the very few with a winning record against Garry Kasparov (three wins, four draws, and one loss). An important warning, especially for amateurs who frequently use computer engines. In the endgame, Gulko doesn't settle for a draw and continues attacking. It's true that Bronstein had a winning move, but that idea is as easy for a computer as it is almost impossible for a human, even one with the surname Bronstein.
