Viktor Korchnoi (1931-2016), one of the great uncrowned champions in history, returns to this collection of brilliant games with one that also illustrates his indomitable character. From the very opening, and despite playing with the black pieces, he seeks risky positions, giving up important squares in exchange for securing others, as well as control of the large white diagonal. He then sacrifices material to enter a long combination that demands very precise calculation, culminating in another winning sacrifice. The game in this video is also an example of the twists and turns that life takes. His opponent, Nikolai Krogius, a distinguished grandmaster and psychologist, was one of Korchnoi's most brilliant colleagues in 1958; they enjoyed great mutual respect. But then, in 1976, when Korchnoi became a dissident and fled the USSR, Krogius, then technical director of the Soviet Chess Federation, became one of his staunchest enemies.
