On the morning of May 23rd 2024 at around 9am, a cluster of scattered and weak storms were making their way East along a weak cold front in the morning hours. Since this was the first thunderstorm walk of the year, it usually takes me time to get used to the elements - so I chose the easiest route to get ample views of the approaching line to make sure everything was safe. I consider this "Pre-Season Warmup Time" The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning at the last minute. These storms were not up to mid summer strength, but the National Weather Service must have seen something and was playing it on the safe side by issuing the alert, since it was during a morning commute. Rain for this storm was on the moderate to heavy side. Thunder and lightning are present, but nothing dangerous. Mostly cloud to cloud - but there was evidence of at least a couple of strikes in the vicinity. The scattered cells managed to merge into 2 lines, and I was caught flat footed on the second line of storms and had to make a last minute change in the walking route. Winds shifted to a new direction and were gusty during this time. Rain went from moderate to very heavy for a period of time. (Please check timestamps below for specific areas of the walk.) Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro and Storm Info 00:57 - 4th Avenue - Shore Road to Marine Avenue 06:25 - Marine Avenue to 3rd Avenue & 97th Street 10:15 - 97th Street to Marine Avenue 15:11 - Winds starting to pickup 17:00 - Rain picks up in intensity 18:00 - Marine Ave Ends - Colonial Road Begins 19:08 - Storm lines merge - Heaviest period of rain on the walk 20:28 - Cloud to Ground Lightning with thunderclap 21:07 - Changing route down 89th Street due to gusty wind direction change 27:10 - Rain easing up on 3rd Avenue 27:32 - Some street runoff draining on 88th Street... 31:12 - Storm exiting - 4th Avenue. Rest of the walk takes us down to 90th Street, and then ending the walk on 5th Ave and 92nd Street. Come along for our first thunderstorm walk in 2024.
