Why Kids Can’t Read, Behave, or Do Math Anymore | Brain Science Explains Everything
What happens when children are never required to learn self-control, emotional regulation, or basic academic skills early in life? In this episode, we explore the neuroscience schools ignore and how early discipline, behavior, and learning habits shape the developing brain. When children are not corrected at a young age, the brain wires repeated patterns of tantrums, avoidance, and defiance into long-term neural pathways. Over time, these behaviors become automatic, not because a child has a mental disorder, but because the brain learned that misbehavior works and gets rewarded. Instead of teaching self-regulation, modern parenting and educational systems often avoid correction in the name of preserving self-esteem. Ironically, this approach produces the opposite result. Children grow into adolescents and adults who do not realize they have the power of self-control because they were never required to practice it. As these patterns continue, normal developmental behaviors are increasingly reframed as mental health disorders rather than understood as predictable outcomes of early environments that removed boundaries, accountability, and structure. This same neurological pattern shows up in academics. When foundational skills like phonics, reading fluency, and math facts are not reinforced early, students are pushed forward through social promotion without mastery. The brain begins to associate learning with confusion, fear, and failure. Students then disengage, avoid effort, or cheat, not because they lack intelligence, but because they lack core skills. Over time, these students internalize shame and low self-worth. In trying to protect children from frustration early on, we unintentionally create adults who: • lack basic academic and life skills • struggle with emotional regulation • have weak social and behavioral boundaries • feel incompetent and anxious • believe success is outside their control Self-esteem is not built by avoiding struggle. It is built by mastering skills! Our guest, Loretta Breuning, offers a rare multi-level perspective. She spent 25 years as a college professor, where she observed firsthand how students arrived academically underprepared, emotionally dysregulated, and increasingly reliant on cheating and avoidance. At the college level, the end of the social promotion pipeline, maintaining standards became nearly impossible, and education was often replaced by credentialing. After taking early retirement, Loretta began studying the brain and writing extensively about the limbic system, motivation, behavior, and neuroplasticity. She is the founder of the Inner Mammal Institute, where she helps parents, educators, and individuals understand how early experiences shape lifelong behavior patterns. Her work explains how habits form in the brain and how they can be changed. 📘 Amazing Book by Loretta Breuning Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain Your Brain to Boost Your Serotonin, Dopamine, Oxytocin, and Endorphin Levels https://amzn.to/3KFNjek 🔗 Learn more about Loretta Breuning Inner Mammal Institute https://innermammalinstitute.org Loretta Breuning on YouTube / innermammalinstitute This conversation connects neuroscience, parenting, education, discipline, behavior, academic decline, cheating, and self-esteem and explains why good intentions are producing devastating long-term outcomes for children, schools, and society.
