Turbinoplasty: Radiofrequency reduction, Microdebrider resection, Partial resection / KAMINSKYI

Structures look like plums or peaches, composed of blood vessels. When swollen, they compress the nasal septum, obstructing nasal airflow. They swell and enlarge more when we are in a horizontal position (hence, we often experience poor breathing at night and in the morning) due to allergic processes, infections, inflammatory reactions, chronic inflammation, etc. ⠀ Turbinate reduction “turbinoplasty” is usually recommended if nonsurgical treatments don’t solve the issue. Your surgeon reduces the size of turbinates by removing excess tissue. This procedure is also called nasal (inferior) turbinate reduction. ⠀ Turbinates cleanse, heat, and humidify air as it passes through your nasal cavity and into your lungs, so we should be careful with them. ⠀ Turbinate reduction surgery can be performed as a same-day procedure and is usually performed under general anesthesia. ⠀ Some of the techniques described in this video. ⠀ 1st video: Radiofrequency turbinate reduction. Using radiofrequency ablation, a long, thin probe delivers heat energy to your inflamed turbinates, forming scar tissue. Your turbinate tissues shrink. The same effect can be done with Cauterization (a heated probe is placed inside your nose to close off some of the blood vessels in your turbinates) and coblation. The term “coblation” means “controlled ablation.” Like radiofrequency reduction, coblation uses heat energy to shrink your turbinate tissues. However, this method uses a lower temperature to keep surrounding tissues intact. ⠀ 2nd video: Microdebrider submucosal resection. A small opening in a turbine was created, and turbinate tissue was removed with a microdebrider instrument. Then turbinates shrink. ⠀ 3rd video: Partial resection. A small part of the turbinate resected. Partial resection removes both soft and hard tissue. But, it’s a dangerous surgery because aggressive resection can cause: a) Empty nose syndrome (an infrequent condition in which you can’t feel the air that moves through your nasal passages); b) Chronic nasal dryness; c) Nosebleeds. ___________________ Edgar Kaminskyi started his professional career in 2008.
