Ms. Big Rock delivered her first calf here at Pride Ranch, and this is exactly how it happened. When a first-calf heifer starts showing signs of labor, I pay close attention. In this video, you’ll see the progression—from early signs, to labor, to a healthy calf on the ground, and finally that calf getting up and nursing. This is what I look for during calving: Signs that labor is starting How long she takes to progress Whether the calf is alert and moving And most importantly, whether that calf gets up and nurses You’ll also see what I do the next day when I come back to tag, weigh, and check on a newborn calf.
