When is the Affair--at the start of Escape & Avoid or somewhere in the middle?

I have a question about the Escape & Avoid stage. Does an affair start in beginning of Escape & Avoid or can it happen after they have been in this stage for over a year or 2? If I missed this somewhere I apologize. I've read so much over the last few years about MLC that I literally can’t remember your opinion on this. I’ve seen others say that the affair usually begins first in the beginning and can last awhile. Are there any signs it will burn quicker?
