The record-breaking heatwave that has engulfed much of Europe and Ukraine is creating additional challenges for Ukrainian troops on the front lines. Particularly challenging are the crews of Soviet-era T-72 tanks, which, due to the lack of air conditioning, literally turn into heat traps during the summer heat, Reuters reports. The senior sergeant of the tank battalion of the 65th separate mechanized brigade of Ukrain, call sign "Simpatyaha," says that after completing combat missions, the tempeerature inside the vehicle becomes extremely high. "The equipment gets very hot after completing a mission. The temperature inside can become very high. Unlike the Abrams, Challenger, and Leopard tanks supplied by Western partners, this one doesn't have air conditioning," the military officer noted. T-72 battle tanks weigh between 41 and 45 tons, and their steel hulls quickly overheat in the summer heat. At positions in the Zaporizhzhia region, tank crews are forced to cool themselves with water right next to their vehicles. In the coming days, temperatures in the region are expected to rise to approximately 36 degrees Celsius, making military service even more challenging. Despite the difficult conditions, Ukrainian defenders emphasize that they continue to carry out combat missions. "Despite the harsh weather conditions—the scorching heat now, subzero temperatures, and mud in winter—we're still holding out. We're continuing to fight the Russian troops, preventing them from advancing," the sergeant said. For the Russians, these tanks are also useless in the Ukrainian steppes. Sometimes, soldiers even refuse to fight with these tanks. In this case Russian state technology corporation Rostec has reported that the country’s primary type of main battle tank, the T-90M, is being continuously upgraded based on feedback from personnel in the Ukrainian theatre. “The T-90 is a well-known tank. It has become more powerful with enhanced armour and protection. This is an ongoing process. The armoured vehicle continues to be improved. Our specialists are refining the hardware based on new tasks coming from the frontline. The knowledge of fighters engaged in the special military operation, who have practical experience of operating our equipment, is useful for modernising hardware and creating new models,” Rostec’s press office quoted its Deputy CEO Nikolay Volobuyev as saying. The T-90M first entered service in April 2020, and is considered the most capable type of main battle tank in Russian service by a significant margin. Rostec’s press office further elaborated that the tank has in recent months received a significantly enhanced electronic warfare system. Extra protection of the engine-transmission compartment projection has also been added to the tank’s upper hemisphere defence. The tank’s producer Uralvagonzavod was also reported to be continuing efforts on further developing the tank’s passive and active defence systems and improving its operational and technical characteristics, with an emphasis on boosting the survivability and crew protection levels. The T-90M has seen its counter-drone capabilities enhanced with the integration of Russia’s first hard kill active protection system, the Arena-M, from late 2024. It was confirmed in early January 2026 that a new variant of the Arena-M system capable of intercepting single use drone and loitering munition attacks had completed development.
