Marli carries childhood scars that still hurt, but she decided to raise her grandchildren with all the love and dignity she never received from her own mother. Born on Ilha do Governador, the daughter of a military man and a very young mother, Marli experienced separation, neglect, public humiliation, and even hunger. Even as a child, she was the most active in the house and always found ways to bring food to her siblings. Today she is a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who made sure to give her grandchildren everything she didn't have: education, structure, and lots of love. She raised four grandchildren with degrees in careers such as Law, Production Engineering, and Nursing. In this moving interview on "Histórias da Gente" (Our Stories), Marli recounts how she worked from the age of 13 cleaning other people's houses, studied on her own later, built a career as a real estate agent, and maintains a huge heart for helping those in need—even going to communities to deliver masks and food during the pandemic and rescuing stray dogs. And most touchingly: even after everything, she visits her 92-year-old mother in the nursing home.
