Dear friends, I present to you the sixth part of the film about our journey in the AutoDom - KOToDom across Russia (Moscow, Moscow Region, and Kaluga Region) during the "isolation period" from May 22 to 25, 2020, which tells the story of the city of Tarusa. * * "I live in a small town on the Oka River. It is so small that all its streets face either the river with its gentle and solemn curves, or the fields where the wind sways the grain, or the forests where in the spring the bird cherry blossoms profusely among the birches and pines..." (K. Paustovsky) Tarusa is an ancient Russian town, the administrative center of the Tarusa District of the Kaluga Region. The town is located at the confluence of the Tarusa (Taruska) and Oka Rivers, 36 km from Serpukhov and 70 km from Kaluga. The city has the status of a natural and architectural reserve and is included in the list of historical cities of Russia. The year Tarusa was founded is considered to be 1246, due to the first mention of the city (then known as Torus) in historical documents. Throughout its existence, Tarusa was both the center of an appanage principality and the center of its own principality, and from the late 14th century, it was part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. In the 16th century, Tarusa was repeatedly attacked by the Crimean Tatars, as it was an important strategic coastal defense point along the Oka River on the southern approaches to the capital. During the Patriotic War of 1812, Tarusa became the closest rear city through which the Russian army received food and weapons. "Perhaps nowhere near Moscow were there places so typically and touchingly Russian in their landscape. For many years, Tarusa was a kind of sanctuary for this landscape, astonishing in its lyrical power, diversity, and gentleness. It's no wonder that, since the late 19th century, Tarusa has become a city of artists, a kind of domestic Barbizon. Polenov and the exquisite artist Borisov-Musatov lived here, as did Krymov, Vatagin, and many of our artists. Young people from Moscow art institutes come here every summer for internships. Writers and scientists followed the artists, and Tarusa became a kind of creative laboratory and haven for artists and scientists," wrote Konstantin Georgievich Paustovsky. "You approach Tarusa by boat or from the Tula shore—the city is as if in the palm of your hand, yet it's almost invisible behind the garden greenery, only the cathedral and the church on Voskresenskaya Hill visible as beacons." "And in spring, when the apple trees bloom, Tarusa glistens like a bride in her wedding dress... And what floodplain meadows along the Oka and Taruska, what grasses and flowers—you won't find them everywhere in the central part of the country. The Oka flows from the south and brings us asparagus, evening primrose, sage, clematis, the rare Dutchman's pipe, and orchids. Botanists come to the Oka floodplain meadows to collect these rare plants," wrote Russian artist Vasily Alekseevich Vatagin. * * Our campervan travel route (during isolation): Moscow - A.P.
