But when I took the train far out of Sapporo into the suburbs, what I saw wasn’t just beauty — it was a silence deeper than the cold air itself. On the empty streets, I walked past old buildings and shuttered shops, until I finally came across a small restaurant dimly lit from within. I decided to push the door open and found an elderly lady quietly sitting at a chair, with her son standing behind the counter. Their faces showed a mix of surprise and warmth when someone like me — a rare “customer” — walked in on a day when no one else had come. There wasn’t much conversation, but their eyes and the slow, sincere service said it all. For some people, simply keeping the shop open is a way of resisting — and affirming their identity in a world that’s moving too fast for them to catch up.
