The annual "Theru" celebration is conducted between February - march to invoke the favor of the gods, particularly Goddess Pattini. The hoisting of the flag signals the beginning of the early morning 'poojas'. The 'poojas' in the morning last until around noon. The 'poojas' in the evening begin at six and last till midnight. The annual 'Chariot Festival' and religious festivities at the historic Matale Sri Muthumari Amman temple began on February 1st with the traditional 'flag hoisting' ceremony. This auspicious occasion marks the commencement of a series of sacred rituals and celebrations. The highlight of the festivities is the grand 'Theru' festival, featuring the majestic procession of five chariots carrying Hindu deities. Scheduled to take place on Medan Full Moon day, this vibrant procession will captivate devotees and visitors alike with its colorful displays and spiritual significance. As the temple grounds come alive with devotion and reverence, the Chariot Festival stands as a testament to the enduring traditions and cultural heritage of Sri Lanka's Hindu community. The spirit of unity and collaboration shines brightly during the 'Theru' festival at the Muthumari Amman Kovil in Matale, where Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and Christians come together in harmony. Originally, the Hindus, with support from other faith communities, fundraised to build a single chariot for the Goddess's procession. Over time, this humble beginning blossomed into a magnificent spectacle, with three additional chariots joining the procession, totaling five. As the chariots glide through the streets, adorned with vibrant decorations of banana trees, mango leaves, and tender coconut leaves, the entire town is transformed into a kaleidoscope of colors and cultural richness.
