After Welikada jail in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Bogambara Prison was the second largest jail in the nation and a maximum security facility. On January 1, 2014, the jail closed after 138 years of operation, and the prisoners were moved to the newly constructed Dumbara prison complex in Pallekele. The government announced in 2019 that the jail site would be transformed into Bogambara Cultural Park, a destination for cultural tourism.
