Strépy-Thieu (Belgium) the world's largest boat elevator
Today's nautical news takes us to Belgium, to Strépy-Thieu, to introduce you to the world's largest boat elevator. This elevator is located on the Canal du Centre, which links the Sambre and Scheldt rivers over a distance of 13 kilometers. Built in the 19th century, this canal is best known for its boat elevators, particularly the one at Strépy-Thieu. Work on this lift took 20 years, and it was inaugurated in 2002. This gigantic elevator overcomes a 73-metre difference in height, facilitating the passage of boats weighing up to 1,350 tonnes.
