Capablanca's "Play to the Gallery" Masterpiece The Dominating Rook Capablanca best chess endings 33

"I think I'll play to the gallery." Capablanca said it to Tartakover after his 16th move - then produced one of the unknown masterpieces of chess. London, 1922. With the Black pieces against J. S. Morrison, Capablanca launched a combination that wrecked White's pawns, traded the queens, and reached a rook ending a pawn up. Euwe and Prins ranked the whole game among Capablanca's all-time finest. But the lesson is not the fireworks - it is what came after. Chernev's verdict on the ending is one sentence long: "Capablanca's advantage lies in the dominating position of his Rook." One dominating rook decided everything. Read the position before you read the moves. ♟️ A dominating rook can be the whole advantage - Chernev names it outright. The rook eyes White's d-pawn, "the support of his entire position," by getting behind it or onto the seventh rank. ♟️ Fix the enemy rook to passive defence - 39...Rd2 "relegates White's Rook to passive defence." A dominant rook turns the opponent's into a spectator. ♟️ The rook belongs behind the passer - even White's only try is to get the rook behind the pawn (50.Ra4). The same principle, from both sides. ♟️ Connected passers finish - Capablanca trades into a passed a-pawn (44...Rxa2), runs the connected a- and d-pawns, and 53...Be4 paralyses White's last hope. Promotion comes with check. This is the second half of a pair. In the previous rook lesson we saw that ACTIVITY is a real, winnable edge. Here we see its mature form: DOMINATION. Activity wins games; domination ends them. Note too the critical history - Alekhine called Capablanca's 27...Kh7 a blunder and Maroczy doubted it, but Euwe and Prins would award it an exclamation mark. The engines side with Euwe and Prins.
