T20P3 - La melancolía de los poetas y filósofos
History of Psychopathology for Clinicians Topic 20: Melancholy Part 3: The Melancholy of Poets and Philosophers By Dr. José María Álvarez With the participation of María Carmen Arias Abellán (Student of the Master's Program in Psychopathology and Psychoanalytic Clinic, University of Valladolid; Munich) and Sol Dib (Student of the Master's Program in Psychopathology and Psychoanalytic Clinic, University of Valladolid; Buenos Aires). Clinicians and psychopathologists know very little about melancholy, and all of it relates to illness. In *Culture and Melancholy*, Roger Bartra refers to melancholy as "that fascinating constellation of ancient problems and anxieties that the history of the West has preserved in its memory throughout the centuries." This observation reveals the limited perspective with which we, from our point of view, address this issue. With the aim of showing clinicians that melancholy is rooted in our cultural history as an essential part of the human condition, this class will briefly present some commentaries on the work of Raymond Klibansky, Erwin Panofsky, and Fritz Saxl, *Saturn and Melancholy*; it will bring up certain references by Robert Burton to losses as causes of melancholy, as developed in *Anatomy of Melancholy*; and, based on a text by Rafael Huertas on scruples, obsessions, and melancholy, contained in *Another History for Another Psychiatry*, it will mention an essential aspect that reappears in Freud regarding guilt and self-reproach. This wound of the soul that is melancholy, which has been explored by poets and philosophers, its relationship to loss, and the interpretation of self-reproach as an accusation will help us better understand Freud's conception of melancholy and appreciate his prodigious innovation. We will address these topics next time. *More articles and information on our website* https://www.laotrapsiquiatria.com *FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA* Facebook: / laotrapsiquiatria Twitter: / laotrapsi Instagram: / laotrapsiquiatria
