Towering mountain passes, narrow shelf roads, and some of the most breathtaking backcountry terrain in the American West — the Alpine Loop is one of Colorado’s most iconic overland routes. In this expedition through the San Juan Mountains, we travel deep into Colorado’s alpine backcountry as we cross Cinnamon Pass and explore remote mountain roads high above the tree line. Connecting historic mining towns through the rugged San Juan Mountains, the Alpine Loop traverses high-altitude passes, abandoned mining regions, and dramatic alpine landscapes that make this one of the most unforgettable backcountry routes in Colorado. Along the route, we navigate rocky mountain terrain, dramatic elevation changes, and exposed shelf roads while exploring some of the most remote and scenic areas in western Colorado.
