This Pokémon Yellow Worked… But the PCB Was Warped
I picked up a “for parts” copy of Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition, and at first glance it looked like the cartridge might still be usable. The game actually booted, but once I opened it up, the PCB was severely warped. Even though the cartridge was technically working, I did not trust that board long-term. A warped PCB can put stress on solder joints, cartridge contacts, vias, and the ROM legs, so I decided the better repair was to move the original ROM chip onto a matching DMG-A02-01 donor PCB. In this repair, I remove the original ROM, transfer it to a better board, verify the orientation and leg alignment under the microscope, install a fresh CR1616 save battery, and test that the game still boots and saves through a reboot. This is not just a battery swap. It is a full board-level cartridge rescue.
