This Pokémon Crystal Wouldn’t Save After Reboot… Until I Found the Real Issue

A customer sent in a copy of Pokémon Crystal that would not hold a save after rebooting. At first, the problem looked like a straightforward battery or solder issue, but after the first repair attempt, the game still refused to keep its save data. In this repair video, I walk through the full troubleshooting process: the initial test, the first repair attempt, why that did not fully solve the problem, and the hidden board issue that was preventing the save data from storing properly. After tracking down the real fault and repairing the damaged connection, Pokémon Crystal was finally able to save again. This one is a good reminder that cartridge repairs are not always as simple as “just replace the battery.” Corrosion, lifted pins, damaged traces, and failed vias can all cause save issues even when the battery itself is good.
