Supply chain is an exciting field with endless opportunities, whether you’re starting out or aiming for a leadership role. I’ve been in this industry for nearly 50 years, and I’ve seen people climb all the way to CEO through supply chain careers. But how do you get started? Let’s break it down. 1. *Qualifications – Are They Essential?* A big question I get asked is: Do I need a degree to succeed in supply chain? The short answer—it depends. If you’re aiming for top management roles, degrees (like a bachelor’s or master’s) can certainly help. But they’re not the only path! Many people have built successful careers without formal degrees, instead gaining qualifications through industry courses, certifications, and hands-on experience. The key is to align your education with your long-term career goals. 2. *Getting That First Experience* This is often the toughest hurdle—how do you gain experience if no one will hire you without it? My advice? Don’t be afraid to start at the bottom. Whether it’s working in a warehouse, handling order picking, or joining a third-party logistics (3PL) company, any exposure to supply chain operations is valuable. It helps you understand how the industry works and can lead to bigger opportunities down the line. Remember, many top executives in supply chain started with entry-level jobs! 3. *Job Applications – Keep Going!* Applying for jobs can be exhausting and full of rejections, but persistence is key. Hunting for a job is a full-time job! Apply for as many positions as possible, reach out to recruiters, and don’t hesitate to go for roles that seem like a stretch—it’s all part of gaining interview experience and building confidence. The more you put yourself out there, the better your chances of landing the right job. 4. *Networking – The Game Changer* This is the big one*! Networking is the single most powerful way to advance your supply chain career. Most of my job opportunities have come through networking rather than job ads. Join industry associations, attend networking events, and connect with people in the field. In Australia, organizations like the **Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA)* offer excellent networking opportunities, training programs, and mentorships. If you're in the Middle East, *The Supply Chain & Logistics Group (SCLG)* in Dubai is another great resource.
