Historians Alexander Kolpakidi and Oleg Airapetov continue their account of the events in southern Africa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. White settlers ("outsiders"), rushing from all directions to the diamond and gold mines, quickly outnumbered the Boer colonists of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, creating an insurmountable problem. The British Empire encouraged the new arrivals to demand equal rights, and the potential granting of citizenship to them would have quickly led to the disappearance of the Boer republics. Cecil Rhodes's men began plotting an uprising, taking advantage of the economic crisis that erupted in the Rand (the main gold-mining region) in 1895. It was envisioned that a detachment of irregular militia, supported by rebel "outsiders," would invade the Boer republics from Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). London's greatest fear was the German Empire's increased activity, which led to some adjustments to the original plan. Financial tensions were mounting, a full-scale war was inevitable, and the Jameson Raid proved to be little more than a prelude to far larger and more dramatic events, which largely determined the use of certain weapons and the logic of military action in the future wars of the 20th century.
