Newcastle's Hidden Medieval Gem - UK's Oldest Restaurant?

This time I'm discovering one of Newcastle's true hidden gems – Blackfriars, a remarkable medieval friary dating back to 1239, tucked away just a few steps from the busy city centre. Once home to Dominican friars, Blackfriars is now a unique bar and restaurant where centuries of history meet great food, locally brewed beer and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. During my visit I explore the beautiful cloistered courtyard, enjoy a pint brewed on the premises and finally tick something off my bucket list by trying Calvados for the very first time. A member of staff also kindly shows me around the magnificent medieval banqueting hall, giving a fascinating glimpse into one of Newcastle's most historic buildings. For me, Blackfriars really is an oasis of calm in the heart of the city – somewhere that feels a world away from the bustle of Newcastle, despite being only a minute or two from the centre.
