This is a country used to winning. Ranked sixth in the world by nominal GDP—nearly $4 trillion in 2025—surpassing France, Italy, and Russia, and home to one of the world’s key financial centers with the London Stock Exchange, one of Europe’s oldest and largest stock exchanges. Britain hosts leading universities like Oxford and Cambridge, and the country’s global influence has been shaped over centuries: from building the largest empire in history, through the industrial revolution and naval dominance, to shaping the modern international relations system, spreading English law, and democratic institutions. It's like a top football club—think Manchester City or Liverpool—that has long played at a high level and consistently contends for top results. But even the strongest teams can lose when they focus not on the long term, but on a short-term solution that looks spectacular but is not necessarily effective. Brexit in this analogy is a team that has ball control, leads the game, but suddenly changes tactics and leaves the tournament where it had every chance of winning. But this isn’t a story about a sudden collapse. For Britain, it turned into an economic disaster. The country has gradually lost its standing: less investment, more difficult trade, more uncertainty. The decision for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union occurred when politics began to dominate over economic logic.
